Occasionally, It is determined from a complete exam that you have some
restorative needs. Whether you need small fillings or large restorations
like onlays, crowns or bridges, we keep to our philosophy to restore the
teeth to their most natural form and function, as conservatively as possible.
In keeping with this philosophy, Dr. Gaunt has not placed amalgam restorations
since 1995. While it is an arguable issue that the mercury- containing
silver fillings are detrimental to your health, Dr. Gaunt prefers the
superior qualities of composites(white bonded restorations), bonded inlays
and onlays to the historic silver fillings. These qualities are highlighted
by minimally invasive tooth preparations, strengthening the teeth via
the tooth-to-restoration bond, durability comparable to natural enamel,
and the resulting natural form and color of the final restorations.
If there is a down-side to the use of tooth-colored composites, it is
that they require more time to place in comparison to similar size silver
fillings. The success of these restorations is dependent upon precise
protocol. The teeth must be protected from any oral contamination during
the bonding process and the placement of composites is done in a careful
layering technique to ensure comfort and strength. Finally, finishing
the restoration involves minor adjustment and polishing to achieve a life-like
and nearly imperceptible restoration. This exacting work and beautiful
result is appreciated by our patients who like the fact that we spend
that level of time and attention to their dental treatment.
