Convenient Answers to Common Questions

We want to make sure that our communication with you is clear and easy to access. That's why we've compiled these frequently asked questions and their answers. Of course, if you have other questions that aren't listed here, we'd like to hear from you! Just call or email us any time.

Why did you name your practice "Dothan Cosmetic Dentistry"?

It would be easy to assume that our name means we only redesign smiles. Although we enjoy doing "Smile Rehabilitation", the name is more a reflection of this philosophy: our desire to restore your teeth to their most original state. That means using esthetic materials wherever possible to restore your teeth to their original appearance; it also means using the most conservative means possible to reach our desired goals; and it involves employing techniques and materials that strengthen teeth and optimize teeth function. We find it far more rewarding to place a nearly invisible 'filling', or artistically create a natural looking crown, bridge, or veneer than to race through as many patients per day as possible.

In terms of services, we provide in-office one-appointment and take-home whitening systems, as well as a complete range of restorative and preventive services. This includes a real emphasis on regular hygiene visits to preserve your teeth and any restorative work for the long run.

And finally, you'll find that our office environment itself reflects cleanliness, warmth, and a pleasing appearance…just as will your ideal smile.

Since you do 'cosmetic dentistry', are you going to try to pick out every flaw in my smile/teeth and persuade me to replace all my silver fillings?

Emphatically, NO! I would much rather the patients tell me about their key concerns, rather than my trying to 'sell' them on the latest, greatest dentistry on our lot! It's far more rewarding to reach your dental health goals, than to pressure you into accepting my goals for you. Instead, my process is as follows: I will conduct a thorough examination, make recommendations as to how to improve unhealthy conditions, and then together create a treatment plan in keeping with both your values and my professional integrity in performing dentistry properly.

As to the subject of 'silver' or 'mercury' fillings…I have chosen not to place these kind of fillings since 1995, primarily due to today's superior alternatives. Instead, I prefer to place bonded esthetic restorations. When executed precisely, these add both strength and beauty to the smile.

How can I have whiter teeth?

We offer a couple different procedures to whiten your smile: both an in-office one-appointment ZOOM® system, and an at-home tray-based whitening system. I'll be glad to evaluate your potential for whitening your teeth, based on their current color and the causes of any discoloration. Once you have decided on the most appropriate method, you’ll simply come in for your appointment or take home custom-designed whitening trays requiring about 2 to 4 weeks of brief daily sessions. Most patients can expect to end up with teeth approximately 4-6 shades brighter on the dental shade chart.

What makes you different from any other dental practice I could visit?

From the moment you call us on the phone or step through our office door, you'll find that your comfort is our primary concern. We can say this, because we've actually outlined a 'vision' for our practice of what a 5-star dental office should be like…then implemented every detail of that vision here. From office décor, to carefully-chosen staff, to the technology we've invested in, you'll find that we provide the best dental treatment possible in the most comfortable atmosphere possible. In fact, we've even been told that our patient restroom is awesome!

Furthermore, Dr. Gaunt personally takes responsibility to ensure that each and every appointment is a success…doing all the dentistry himself. Our assistants do NOT fill teeth! We also avoid double-booking restorative appointments, scheduling only one at a time so that we have plenty of time to work precisely and carefully without rushing.

I'm a new patient and would like to fill out the necessary forms prior to my visit. How can I do this?

We are happy to mail or fax you the forms you'll need to complete so that you can do so at home or at work on your own timetable. You can then return them to us via mail or fax to secure your appointment time with us.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I don't want to wear braces. What do you recommend?

I can suggest a number of ways to improve the look of your front teeth without the use of braces. However, the first step toward solving this, is to conduct a thorough exam. Once I have assessed your bite, oral health, and structural condition of your front teeth, I can determine if you're a candidate for some reshaping and porcelain veneers; or if we should implement invisible braces behind your front teeth. In any case, we’d be happy to consult with you about the appearance of your front teeth and create a treatment plan to accomplish your objectives.
